Protected Crayfish found in Leeds Waters

January 4, 2006 at 3:32 pm

Britain’s only native crayfish – the freshwater white clawed crayfish have been found in an urban area of Leeds. Meanwood Beck has been a site for crayfish for years but their habitat has been restricted only to the more rural areas because of water quality.

Thanks to work by Yorkshire Water partnered with the Environmental Agency cleaning up sewerage and rainwater overflow discharging into Meanwood Beck, these crayfish have now been found further downstream.
